Reviews app UGC add-on vs a dedicated UGC platform: how to choose

Six questions on sources, video, rights, platforms and price. With REVIEWS.io, Yotpo, Okendo and Judge.me as examples. We make Idukki.

It is 10pm and a shopper has your linen dress in her basket. She scrolls down to the reviews. Plenty of stars, two photos, neither on anyone her height. She closes the tab. Next morning your reviews app emails about its UGC add-on. It can pull in Instagram posts too. Then you open the pricing page.

In this article

The photo she wanted may already exist. Customers post your products on Instagram and TikTok. Those posts stay there unless something brings them to the product page.

You have two ways to bring them over. Switch on your reviews app’s UGC add-on. Or add a dedicated UGC platform beside the reviews app. Pick wrong and you pay twice. Once for a plan upgrade you did not need. Then again when you move every gallery later.

Pick right and the next shopper sees someone like her in the dress. You also keep a bill you can predict. The six questions below are the criteria we use in this guide. The table after them applies those criteria to four reviews apps and to Idukki.

Which path fits your store?

Start here

Where do most of your customer photos come from today?

  • Review requests after an order

    Start with the add-on

Your reviews app already holds most of the content.

    • The shoppable gallery is on your current plan: Keep the add-on
    • The gallery needs a top-tier upgrade: Price a dedicated platform against that upgrade
  • Instagram and TikTok posts

    Look at a dedicated platform

Social posts and video are where it starts.

    • Customers post a lot of video: Test that a Reel plays on the product page
    • You sell on a second store platform: Check platform support before price
A starting point drawn from the six questions below. Our reading, and we make Idukki.

The six questions

A demo usually opens on a neat grid of review photos. The buy is decided by what sits under it.

What the demo shows, and what you are buying

What everyone sees

A grid of review photos

What most demos open on

What the six questions check

What you actually build and maintain

  1. Social sources

Mentions, tags and hashtags are three different feeds.

  2. Video

A Reel that plays, or one still frame.

  3. Plan tier

Which plan puts product tags on social posts.

  4. Rights

How permission is asked, and where the yes is kept.

  5. Store platforms

Shopify only, or the platform you add next year.

  6. The bill

Monthly orders, a flat fee, or widget impressions.

The six questions in this guide, one layer each.

1. Which social posts can it pull in?

More sources put more of your customers on the product page. Ask which networks it reads and which post types. An @mention, a photo tag and a hashtag are three different feeds. REVIEWS.io’s own help page says its UGC Manager shows Instagram mentions. It says images where you are tagged will not show. Ask your shortlist the same question in writing.

2. Does video play as video?

A clip shows how a dress moves when someone walks in it. A still frame cannot. Some add-ons store a social video as one still frame. REVIEWS.io’s help page says Instagram videos are fetched as still images. If your customers post Reels or TikToks, test one in the demo. Watch whether it plays on the product page.

3. Which plan does the shoppable gallery sit on?

This question moves your bill the most, so ask it before the demo ends. On REVIEWS.io’s pricing page, shoppable UGC galleries sit on Plus at $500 a month. Its Start-Up plan is $79. Yotpo sells Visual UGC as a product apart from Reviews. Write down the plan that includes product tags on social posts. Price that plan first.

REVIEWS.io: where UGC sits on the price list

  • Start-Up
    $79/mo
  • Grow, with UGC Manager
    $175/mo
  • Plus, with shoppable UGC galleries
    $500/mo

4. How does it ask for permission, and where is the yes kept?

A dated yes on file means less risk when a post ends up in an ad. A customer’s post belongs to the customer. Ask how the app requests rights and where it stores the reply. Ask whether you can see the date of each yes. Our rights management page shows how Idukki records it.

5. Does it run on your store platform?

Get this right and a second store will not mean moving every gallery. Judge.me closed its WooCommerce, BigCommerce, PrestaShop and other apps between October 2025 and January 2026. It runs on Shopify only now. Okendo is built for Shopify too. If a second store on another platform is likely, ask now.

6. What does the bill count?

Know the bill for your busiest month before you sign. Reviews apps usually bill by monthly orders. Yotpo Reviews and Okendo Reviews both scale with order volume. Judge.me charges a flat $15 a month for Awesome. Idukki bills by widget impressions. Price each meter against your busiest month. What UGC software costs compares the meters in more detail.

CompareWhere each kind fits
1UGC add-on

Inside your reviews app

Review photos first, social posts second.

Wins at

  • One vendor and one login
  • Review photos flow in with no extra setup
  • Cheapest when the entry plan has the gallery

Struggles with

  • Shoppable galleries often on the top plan
  • Fewer social post types
  • Usually Shopify first
2Dedicated platform

A UGC tool beside your reviews

Social posts and video first, reviews as one source.

Wins at

  • More social sources and post types
  • Video plays as video
  • Rights requests built in

Struggles with

  • A second vendor to manage
  • No review collection of its own in some tools
  • Another script on the page

Our reading of the vendor pages above. Idukki is ours.

When the add-on is the better buy

Here the add-on saves you a vendor, a login and a second script on the page.

  • Most of your customer photos arrive through review requests.
  • You sell on Shopify and plan to stay there.
  • The plan you already pay for includes the shoppable gallery.
  • You post few social videos, or none.
  • One vendor matters more to your team than more sources.

If that list fits, keep the add-on. When not to buy a UGC platform covers more cases where waiting is right.

When a dedicated platform is the better buy

Here a dedicated platform puts more of your customers on the product page.

  • Customers tag you on Instagram or TikTok more than they leave photo reviews.
  • Video is a big share of what they post.
  • The add-on’s gallery needs a plan upgrade you would not make for reviews.
  • You sell on a second platform, or might next year.
  • You need a stored rights record for each post you reuse.

You do not have to drop the reviews app. Idukki shows Yotpo, Loox and Okendo star ratings on tagged Shopify products. It reads them from your review metafields. It also imports Judge.me photo and video reviews. Your reviews stay where they are.

How Idukki answers the six questions (ours)

We make Idukki, so check these answers like any other vendor’s. Idukki pulls posts from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, X, LinkedIn, Threads and Facebook. Instagram covers hashtags, tagged posts, reels, stories and accounts. Videos play as video in shoppable video layouts.

Rights requests go out as a comment on Instagram and YouTube posts. Each reply is saved against the post. Shoppers add to cart inside the gallery on Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaShop and BigCommerce. On Salesforce Commerce Cloud, this is in early access. The core widget weighs 79 KB gzipped, measured October 2026.

Where it falls short: Idukki has no loyalty or referral product. Yotpo and Okendo do. Idukki is no Google review partner either, which REVIEWS.io is. If either matters most, weigh it first. Collecting reviews on your own store is covered on our reviews page and collect UGC.

Comparing with REVIEWS.io in particular? See Idukki vs REVIEWS.io and keep REVIEWS.io and add Idukki. For galleries in general, how to choose a UGC gallery app asks ten questions.

Questions store owners ask

  • Is a reviews app UGC add-on the same as a UGC platform?

They overlap. An add-on starts from review photos. A UGC platform starts from social posts and video.

  • Can I keep my reviews app and add a UGC platform?

Yes. Idukki shows Yotpo, Loox and Okendo stars on tagged Shopify products. It imports Judge.me photo and video reviews too.

  • Which REVIEWS.io plan has shoppable UGC galleries?

Plus, at $500 a month on its pricing page on 7 October 2026. Check the live page before you buy.

  • Does Judge.me work outside Shopify?

No longer. It closed its other platform apps between October 2025 and January 2026.
