The post-purchase photo review email that gets replies
Why text-only review asks stall. What a media-ready email needs. A mobile upload path that works. We make Idukki.
The parcel sat on the kitchen table. She had worn the dress once. Your email arrived that night. It asked for stars. It never mentioned a photo. She typed three words and closed the tab.

A text review is useful. A photo review answers fit, colour and scale on the product page. See why photo reviews outperform text reviews. The ask has to match that job.

Why text-only requests stall
Most request emails open with stars. The button says “Leave a review”. The form has a text box. The camera never appears.
The buyer already gave an opinion in their head. Typing it feels like homework. Taking a photo of the dress on a hanger feels concrete.
Text-only asks also bury media behind a second screen. Many people stop after the stars. You get volume without proof.
What a media-ready email includes
Two request emails, side by side
Text-only ask
- Subject: How was your order?
- Stars only above the fold
- Button: Leave a review
- Photo field buried after submit
Media-ready ask
- Subject: Got a photo of your new dress?
- Product thumbnail plus size bought
- Button: Add a photo and stars
- Upload page opens the camera first
- The product they bought. Name, thumbnail and variant.
- One clear ask. Photo first, or photo plus short caption.
- A single CTA. One button. No competing links.
- A mobile upload URL. Opens cleanly in the phone browser.
- An honest incentive line. Only if you really give the reward.
Upload path checklist (mobile first)
Open → tap → upload → submit
- 01
Open
Email loads with product and one CTA above the fold.
- 02
Tap
Button opens the upload page. No login wall.
- 03
Upload
Camera or photo library opens with one tap.
- 04
Submit
Optional caption, stars if needed, then done.
- 1Send yourself the email on your phone.
- 2Tap the button with one thumb. Note every extra screen.
- 3Confirm the camera opens without a desktop-only picker.
- 4Check file size limits. Large phone photos should not fail silently.
- 5Confirm a success screen. Buyers need proof it landed.
Subject and CTA tests worth running
Test one change at a time. Hold the send day and the delay steady.
| Test | Variant A | Variant B | Watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subject noun | How was your order? | Got a photo of your [product]? | Open rate |
| CTA verb | Leave a review | Add a photo | Tap rate |
| Incentive line | None | A disclosed thank-you for any review | Upload rate |
| Length | Short body | Short body plus one tip line | Completion |
Skip vague claims in the subject. “Quick favour” and “We would love your feedback” do not name the photo.
Shopify Klaviyo vs native request
You can send the ask from Klaviyo, from Shopify Flow or from your reviews app. The tool matters less than the path.
- Klaviyo. Strong for segments and A/B subjects. Point the button at your upload page.
- Native reviews app. Simple when stars and media live in one form.
- Idukki request email. Built for photo and video asks after Shopify orders.
Do not send two asks for the same order. Cap it: one channel, one email, one job.
How Idukki maps
We make Idukki. After a Shopify order, you can send a review request or a photo and video request. Setup lives in send post-purchase review and photo requests.
The photo email opens your hosted upload page. Buyers pick the product, add media and a caption. One order gets one email at most.
Sending needs approval for your store. Orders from before switch-on are never emailed.
Questions store owners ask
Should I ask for stars and a photo in one email?
Yes, if the upload page takes both. Keep one CTA. Do not split the same order across two apps.
When should the email go out?
After the buyer has used the product. Timing by fulfilment type is covered in a separate guide.
Is Klaviyo better than a native request?
Klaviyo wins on tests and segments. Native wins on simplicity. Both need a mobile upload path.
Do I need an incentive?
Only if you will give it for any review, good or bad, and disclose it. Test without one first.
Where do the photos go after upload?
In Idukki they land for moderation, then can sit in a review widget or shoppable gallery.
