Video SEO for product pages: what actually gets indexed and ranked
Video on a product page can earn its own search visibility, video thumbnails in results, video-rich snippets, YouTube's own ranking. What actually needs to be in place for that to happen.
A perfectly optimized product page ranked on page one for its core keyword, right up until a competitor added a video, and Google started showing that competitor's thumbnail in the results instead. Nobody on the team had thought of the video as an SEO asset. Google clearly did.

A product video isn't just a conversion tool sitting on the page, it's also a distinct piece of content Google can index, rank and surface separately from the surrounding text, provided the technical groundwork is actually in place. Most brands add video for the shopper and never check whether they've also set it up to be found by search.
The schema that makes video indexable
VideoObject structured data (JSON-LD) tells Google what a video is about, its duration, its thumbnail, and its upload date. Without it, Google can still discover a video technically, but has to infer everything about it from surrounding page context, which is a much weaker signal. A properly implemented VideoObject block is what makes a video eligible to appear as a rich result: a thumbnail directly in search, sometimes with a video carousel placement above standard organic results.
Why captions and transcripts matter beyond accessibility
Google can crawl the text of a caption file the way it crawls any other page text, which means a well-captioned video effectively contributes additional indexable, keyword-relevant content to the page, on top of whatever the visual content shows. This is a genuine dual-purpose investment: captions and subtitles improve accessibility and watch-through rate for human viewers, and give search engines readable text they otherwise wouldn't have.
Hosting and load performance
A video that blocks page render or drags Largest Contentful Paint past Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds can hurt the page's overall ranking even while the video itself is technically well-marked-up. Lazy-loading the player, serving a lightweight thumbnail-first experience, and only loading the full video asset on interaction (the same pattern covered in Core Web Vitals impact of UGC widgets) protects the page's ranking while still getting the video indexed correctly.
YouTube as a parallel ranking surface
If the same video is also hosted on YouTube (even as a supplementary upload, not the primary on-page player), it competes and ranks inside YouTube's own search separately, which is itself the second-largest search engine by query volume. A brand embedding a UGC or product-demo video purely on-site is leaving that entire secondary discovery surface untapped.
