Shopify review theme blocks: an afternoon setup
Install Shopify review theme blocks in ninety minutes. Order of work for stars, review hub, Q&A and thank-you, plus a QA checklist. We make Idukki.
You installed a reviews app last quarter. The stars still missing from half your product templates. The hub page is a blank section. Support still owns every fit question. This afternoon is for finishing the theme work. Leave the app bake-off for another day.
In this article
We make Idukki. On Shopify its theme blocks cover Product Rating Stars, review layouts, Q&A and a thank-you invite. Stars can emit optional review JSON-LD. The steps below fit any reviews app that ships theme app blocks. Stay inside one product for the afternoon.

Install order that avoids broken previews
- 1Install or open the reviews app in Shopify admin.
- 2Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds: turn the reviews embed on.
- 3On a product template, add Product Rating Stars (or equivalent) under the title.
- 4Add the review list / photo reviews block where shoppers expect proof.
- 5Create the reviews hub page and place the hub block.
- 6Add Q&A on the product template; seed at least two answers.
- 7Open Checkout → Thank you / Order status customisations; add the post-purchase block.
- 8Preview as a customer on mobile; then publish the theme.
Shopify's thank-you and order status app blocks work on plans below Plus. You do not need Plus only to ask for a review after payment.
Product stars and structured data
Stars near the title answer "is this trusted?" before the fold. The review list below carries the bodies and photos.
If your block offers "Add SEO structured data", limit it to first-party reviews on that page. Google's guidelines say not to mark up ratings aggregated from other websites. Imported Google or Trustpilot scores can stay visible; leave them out of the JSON-LD.
Hub, Q&A and thank-you
- Hub: a /pages/reviews URL with filters. Shoppers and crawlers can browse proof off the PDP.
- Q&A: one block on the product template. Seed from the support inbox so it is not empty.
- Thank-you: a light ask for a photo or review after payment. Keep scripts off the payment steps.
QA checklist before you publish
| Surface | Pass looks like |
|---|---|
| App embed | Embed on; no console errors on the PDP |
| Stars under title | Average and count match the review list for that product |
| Review list | Bodies and photos visible without a second click maze |
| Structured data | Validator passes; no second AggregateRating from another app |
| Reviews hub | Page loads, lists recent reviews, linked from footer |
| Q&A | At least two seeded answers; ask box works while logged out |
| Thank-you block | Shows after a test order; no checkout payment-step scripts |
| Mobile | Stars and ask box reachable with one thumb |
| Empty product | Product with zero reviews shows no fake 5.0 aggregate |
Run a sample URL through the review schema validator after the stars block is on.
What this afternoon is not
This is not a tour of every Shopify reviews app. Switching apps mid-afternoon resets theme work you already owe yourself. Finish the blocks on the stack you have. Compare vendors later with a clear list of surfaces you already run.
Questions merchants ask
Do I need Shopify Plus for thank-you review blocks?
No. Thank you and Order status app blocks are available below Plus. Payment-step checkout extensions are the Plus-gated surface.
Should I enable review JSON-LD on every product?
Enable it where first-party product reviews are visible. Omit aggregates on products with no rated reviews. Do not mark up imported third-party scores.
What if I already use Judge.me stars?
Keep one markup source. Judge.me can stay as collector and Google submitter. Decide how theme blocks share the page. Avoid double AggregateRating.
How long should seeding Q&A take?
Two to five answers from last week's support macros is enough for the afternoon. Expand after publish.

Syndicating reviews across variants and PDPs
Review syndication shares one product's reviews across its genuine variants so every colourway page shows real depth, not an accidental near-zero. Do it honestly.

Music licensing in UGC video, the hidden legal risk
A UGC video can be cleared on every frame and still expose you, because the music under it carries separate rights. The most common hidden rights problem in UGC.

GDPR, consent and UGC
UGC shows identifiable people, so it is personal data under GDPR. A defensible programme records scoped permission, honours removal requests, and minimises what it holds.
