Shopify SEO checklist for product pages: 13 checks for 2026

Thirteen SEO checks for one Shopify product page. Each says where it lives in admin and how to test it.

You type your best seller's name into Google. A marketplace listing sits first. A reseller sits second, using your photos. Your own page is fourth, with no stars and a title cut short. This checklist works on that one page.

Pick one product. Use your best seller, since it has the most searches to win. Open its admin page in one tab and the live page in another. Work down the list in order. Each check says what to do, where it lives in Shopify and how to test it.

Some fixes sit in the theme. When a check fails on every product, fix the template once. This list covers search. For layout and conversion, use the Shopify product page checklist.

1. Page title and meta description

In Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product. Scroll to the Search engine listing section. Click the pencil icon. You can now edit the page title, meta description and URL handle.

  • Do: lead the title with the words a shopper types. Product type and key detail first, brand after.
  • Do: make the description say what the page answers. Price, sizes, delivery and reviews are good candidates.
  • Know: Shopify warns long titles and descriptions may be cut off in results. Google may rewrite either one.
  • Check: search the product name and read your own result. Then view the page source and find the title tag.

2. URL handle

The handle is the part of the URL after /products/. Shopify creates it from the product title. Edit it in the same Search engine listing section. Keep it short, readable and close to the product name.

Shopify warns that changing a handle too often can stop a product showing in search. Change it once, then leave it. Afterwards, open the old URL. If it shows a 404 page, add a URL redirect to the new one.

3. One H1 that names the product

Shoppers and screen readers scan a page by its headings. The H1 should be the product name, once. Apps and custom sections sometimes add a second H1 above it.

Check: right-click the product name and choose Inspect. Confirm the tag is h1. Then search the page source for other h1 tags.

4. A description that answers buyer questions

Shopify's SEO guide tells merchants to avoid copying manufacturer text. That text may appear on other sites word for word. The reseller above you may be using the same paragraph.

Write your own. Answer the questions support gets: size, material, fit, care and what is in the box. Use short lines a shopper can scan on a phone.

Check: paste the copy into the product description grader. Then search one sentence from it in quotes. If other sites appear, rewrite that part.

5. Image alt text

Google's image guide calls alt text the most important attribute for image metadata. Screen readers read it aloud too. In the product page in admin, click an image and fill in its alt text field.

Shopify suggests keeping alt text to about 125 characters or less. Describe what the photo shows: product, colour, angle and setting. Google warns that keyword stuffing can make a site look like spam.

Check: go through every image on the product, including variant photos. Shopify's Files page can filter files by alt text status.

6. Image file names, size and format

Google suggests short, descriptive file names. Its example: my-new-black-kitten.jpg beats IMG00023.JPG. Rename photos before you upload them.

Google Search supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP and SVG in image tags. Size matters more than format here. web.dev lists image elements among Largest Contentful Paint candidates. On a product page, that is usually the main photo. Upload it large enough for zoom, and no larger.

7. Product structured data

Structured data gives Google the price, stock and rating in a fixed format. Google describes two product result types. Merchant listings are for pages where shoppers can buy. Product snippets also cover review and editorial pages. A Shopify product page can be eligible for both.

Shopify's Liquid has a structured_data filter for products. It outputs a Product, or a ProductGroup when the product has variants. Your theme may already print it. If an app adds Product markup too, keep one source and switch the other off.

Check: run the live URL through Google's Rich Results Test or our review schema validator. Fix errors first, then warnings.

8. Review markup: Google's rules

Stars under a result come from Review and AggregateRating markup. Google's review snippet guidelines set the rules. Two of them catch most stores.

      • Reviews imported from Google, Trustpilot or other sites
      • Ratings that appear only in the code
      • An AggregateRating for a product with no reviews

From Google's review snippet guidelines, checked 21 October 2026.

Google asks that marked-up reviews be readily available to users on that page. It also says not to aggregate reviews or ratings from other websites. Imported reviews can still show on the page. Keep them out of the markup.

We make Idukki. Its Shopify app has a Product Rating Stars block for product pages. One of its settings is "Add SEO structured data (review stars in Google)". It uses the reviews attached to that product. Check its output in the validator like any other source.

      9. Variants and canonical URLs

One Shopify product can load at several addresses. The main one is /products/linen-shirt. A collection link can open /collections/shirts/products/linen-shirt. Shopify's developer docs say both show the same content. Variant links add ?variant= and an ID.

Shopify's SEO guide says it adds canonical tags automatically. A canonical tag names the one URL search engines should index. Google's documentation warns that conflicting canonical tags get ignored.

Check: open the product from a collection page. View the source and find rel="canonical". It should name the /products/ URL. Repeat with a variant link. Each page should carry one canonical tag.

For variant markup, Google supports ProductGroup with hasVariant, variesBy and productGroupID. Shopify's structured_data filter outputs a ProductGroup for products with variants.

Google says each page you care about needs a link from another page. It follows HTML links with an href. Your best seller should sit in at least one collection. Link to it from blog posts that mention it.

Use the product name as the link text. Google asks for descriptive anchor text and warns against stuffing it with keywords.

Check: Search Console's Links report shows how many internal links point to each page.

      11. Page speed and Core Web Vitals

      • 2.5s

        Largest Contentful Paint or less

      • 200ms

Interaction to Next Paint or less

      • 0.1

        Cumulative Layout Shift or less

Google's "good" thresholds, from web.dev. Each is judged at the 75th percentile of page loads, mobile and desktop apart.

Test the product page in PageSpeed Insights, on mobile. The field data shows real visitors. INP needs real taps, so it appears only there. Then turn apps off one at a time and test again.

Review and video widgets sit on product pages, so test them hardest. Our widget speed checklist has eight tests for any of them.

      12. Reviews and customer photos on the page

Reviews add text written in your buyers' words. That text can match searches your own copy never used. Each new review changes the page after you stop editing it.

Customer photos show the product on real people and in real rooms. They need alt text like your own images. Keep the reviews visible on the page. Check 8 depends on it.

      13. Google Merchant Center free listings

Free listings can show your products across Google at no cost, including the Shopping tab. Eligibility depends on the country you sell in. Google does not guarantee a product will show.

On Shopify, install the Google & YouTube channel and connect Merchant Center. It syncs your products and keeps them updated. Google needs unique product identifiers to match products. Add a barcode (GTIN), or brand and MPN where there is none.

Check: Merchant Center lists each product's status. Fix "Not approved" and "Limited" items first. Google reviews new products within 3 to 5 business days.

      FAQs

      • Does Shopify handle product page SEO by itself?

Shopify adds canonical tags automatically. The page title, meta description, handle, alt text and description copy are yours to write.

      • Do I need an app for product schema on Shopify?

Not always. Shopify's structured_data filter can output Product or ProductGroup markup. Test your page first. Add an app only for what is missing.

      • Can I mark up Google reviews I imported to my product page?

No. Google's review snippet guidelines say not to aggregate reviews or ratings from other websites. Show them on the page and leave them out of the markup.

      • Should I change old product handles to add keywords?

Only with a reason. Shopify warns frequent handle changes can stop a product showing in search. If you change one, check the old URL redirects.
