PDP teardown for every new customer: 14 patterns from holiday
Onboarding merchants after peak, the same fourteen PDP social-proof mistakes repeat—use this teardown checklist before you touch widgets.
Every new Idukki customer arrives with a holiday hangover: apps stacked on the PDP, stars from two review engines, a TikTok embed above the fold, and no SKU map for any of it. Before we configure galleries, we run the same PDP teardown—fourteen patterns we saw repeatedly from November through January. We make Idukki; this checklist is how we earn trust in week one. It complements single-element fixes in fix one PDP element in January and emergency swaps in last-shipping-week PDP swaps in 20 minutes.

How to run the teardown (60–90 minutes)
- 1Pick three SKUs: bestseller, average mover, long-tail variant-heavy.
- 2Open mobile and desktop with throttling.
- 3Screenshot each proof zone: hero, price block, reviews, UGC, cross-sell.
- 4Score each pattern below: present / absent / unknown.
Share results with the client before publishing new widgets—otherwise you inherit broken layout twice.
The fourteen patterns
1. Social proof below the third screen on mobile
Shoppers never scroll to community tiles. Move proof up or accept that gallery clicks will underperform.
2. Duplicate star blocks
Two apps render ratings; shoppers see conflicting counts. Pick one schema owner per multi-source reviews markup guide.
3. Auto-playing stranger video with sound
Kills conversion and CWV. Mute, lazy load, or remove.
4. Hashtag embed with no SKU mapping
Pretty grid, zero shoppable paths—classic post-event wall mistake. See event social walls vs commerce galleries.
5. UGC mixed with synthetic in “community” labels
Trust risk. Separate modules; disclose AI per synthetic vs customer UGC placement.
6. No rights evidence for visible posts
Legal time bomb. Stand up the rights log before expand.
7. Review photos orphaned from variant
Shade-specific SKU shows generic studio only. Map review media to variants where the review app allows.
8. CLS from unfixed aspect ratios
Gallery jumps layout on load. Use fixed ratio containers—techniques in lightweight UGC at peak traffic.
9. Proof on OOS SKUs
Community tile links to unavailable variant. Hide or swap rules in Idukki per docs.
10. Email-captured UGC never routed to PDP
Ops gap between ESP and site. Close the loop with approved exports.
11. TikTok haul clips without PDP permission flag
Short-form ≠ web-safe. Follow TikTok haul rights steps.
12. AI-generated FAQs contradict review text
AI search and shoppers both notice. Use AI search PDP citation checklist.
13. Incrementality claims with no holdout
Marketing reports “UGC lifted CR 30%” from before/after. Discipline from holdout tests without lying.
14. Post-peak apps still billing, not serving
Seven-app drift from post-holiday Shopify stack audit—uninstall before adding Idukki.
Priority fix order
| Priority | Pattern | Typical owner |
|---|---|---|
| P0 | 6, 2, 9 | Legal + ecommerce |
| P1 | 1, 8, 4 | CRO + dev |
| P2 | 5, 11, 7 | Content + moderation |
| P3 | 10, 12, 13 | Lifecycle + analytics |
Agencies: bundle P0–P1 into 48-hour onboarding.

When teardown says “do not add gallery yet”
If P0 patterns dominate, adding more tiles increases liability. Fix rights and stars first, then ship a single collection widget on homepage to prove workflow.
Cross-functional readout (template)
Send this table to the client after teardown:
| SKU sample | Mobile proof zone screenshot | Patterns flagged | Owner | Target date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bestseller | Link | 1, 2, 8 | Dev + CRO | |
| Mid-tail | Link | 4, 6 | Moderation | |
| Variant-heavy | Link | 7, 9 | Ecommerce |
Attach links to Idukki help articles on hiding OOS tiles and bulk moderation so implementers do not invent one-off theme hacks.
Why we teardown before recommending shoppable video layouts
Video modules amplify every layout mistake above. If pattern 3 (autoplay) or 8 (CLS) is red, do not enable reel-style layouts from three shoppable video layouts BFCM test until the theme container is stable. Otherwise incrementality tests blame creative when the player never entered viewport.
Hospitality and B2B exceptions
Hotels and venues sometimes import event-wall embeds for group booking pages—pattern 4 again. Route them to direct bookings and guest UGC patterns: proof belongs on experience PDPs with guest rights, not generic homepage iframes.
Bottom line
New customers do not need more apps—they need fewer mistakes repeated. These fourteen patterns are the holiday scars March onboarding should heal before Easter proof sprints and Q2 paid scaling.
