From zero to fifty product reviews: a four-week ops playbook

Import the backlog, request live orders, then capture thank-you media until you hit fifty reviews.

Your new linen shirt has sold eighty units. The product page still shows an empty stars block. Shoppers bounce before the size chart. You do not need a viral campaign. You need a calendar that fills the first fifty reviews without inventing any of them.

In this article

We make Idukki. This calendar uses Idukki's review import, request emails and upload page where they fit. The same sequence works with any reviews app that can import, request and collect media.

Four weeks from empty stars to filters, photos and a usable average.
Four weeks from empty stars to filters, photos and a usable average.

Why fifty, not five

Five reviews can show stars. Fifty reviews let a shopper filter by size, colour and photos. They also give an AI summary enough text to read. Under ten reviews, every new one swings the average.

Pick one product first. A bestseller with recent orders beats a slow SKU you hope will recover.

The four-week calendar

From zero to fifty in four weeks

  1. 01

    Week 1: import the backlog

Pull photo and video reviews from Yotpo, Okendo, Loox or Judge.me into the product.

    Target: 15+

  2. 02

    Week 2: request live orders

Send a review email after every fulfilment for this SKU.

    Target: +15

  3. 03

    Week 3: thank-you capture

Ask recent five- and four-star writers for a photo on an upload page.

    Target: +10 media

  4. 04

    Week 4: close the gaps

Re-request quiet buyers and fix untagged imports.

    Target: 50 live

One product, one owner, one Monday check-in. Adjust volumes to your order rate.

Week 1: import the backlog

If you already ran Yotpo, Okendo or Loox, those apps hold photos you paid to collect. Import them before you email anyone new.

  1. 1Export or connect the source in your reviews tool.
  2. 2Match reviews to the product by store id, SKU or handle.
  3. 3Keep only reviews with media if the page needs photos first.
  4. 4Publish the matched set and hide anything off-brand or wrong colour.

Idukki's steps for Yotpo, Okendo and Loox sit in the import help article. Judge.me has its own connection. Review import is early access on some sources, so ask us to switch yours on.

Week 2: request live orders

Turn on the post-order request for every buyer of this product. No star filter. No reward that needs a positive score.

  • Timing. After fulfilment, once the parcel has had time to arrive.
  • Copy. Ask one useful question: fit, colour in daylight, or how they used it.
  • Form. Let them add a photo or video on the same page as the stars.
  • Moderation. Approve on a daily pass so new reviews do not sit for a week.

On Shopify, Idukki sends a standard email after the order webhook. Every star opens the same hosted form. See reviews for the flow.

Week 3: thank-you capture

Text-only reviews help the average. Photos sell the product. Week 3 asks people who already wrote a review to add a picture.

  • Pull buyers who left four or five stars in the last 30 days.
  • Send a short thank-you with a link to an upload page for that product.
  • Ask for one clear photo in daylight, plus size or shade if it matters.
  • Tag each upload to the product before it goes live.

A hosted upload page with a product picker keeps this tidy. Idukki's sits at collect UGC.

Who owns which step

  • Merchandising. Picks the product and the fifty target.
  • CX or reviews owner. Runs import, requests and the Monday count.
  • Creative. Writes the thank-you prompt and checks photo quality.
  • Dev or theme. Places the stars, photo strip and summary on the PDP.

Where to start if you are already mid-way

Start here

How many published reviews does the product have today?

  • Zero to five

    Start at week 1

Import first. Empty pages convert badly even with perfect request copy.

  • Six to twenty-five

    Start at week 2

Requests are on. Add thank-you capture in week 3.

  • Twenty-six to forty-nine

    Start at week 4

Close gaps: untagged imports, photo asks, quiet buyers.

Pick the week that matches what you already have live.

Questions store owners ask

  • What if we have almost no past reviews to import?

Skip week 1 and stretch weeks 2 and 3. Raise request volume with a second reminder after seven days, still without a star filter.

  • Can we reward the first fifty reviewers?

Yes, if every reviewer gets the same reward and you disclose it on the review. A reward only for five stars is banned under US and UK rules.

  • Should we pause requests on low-stock variants?

Keep requests on. Hide photos that show a discontinued colour if that helps shoppers.

  • When do we turn on an AI review summary?

Once the product has at least five approved reviews. Idukki needs five before it writes one. See the AI summaries help article.

  • Does fifty reviews take four weeks on a slow SKU?

No. Pick a product with enough recent orders. Or keep the same sequence on a longer calendar.
