# What is shoppable UGC? How it works, where it goes and how to measure it

Shoppable UGC is customer content tagged with the products in it. A shopper can buy from the post. The six steps, the formats, where it appears and how to count the sales honestly.

A customer posts a photo in your jacket. She is also wearing the scarf and boots she bought. On most stores that photo sits in a gallery as decoration. A shopper who likes the scarf has to go and find it. Shoppable UGC is the version where she taps the scarf and adds it to her cart.

**Quick answer**

- **Shoppable UGC** is customer content tagged with the products in it.
- A shopper taps a photo, video or review and buys the product shown.
- It takes six steps: collect, clear rights, tag products, publish, add to cart, attribute the order.
- It lives on product pages, home and collection pages, emails, campaign pages and in-store QR codes.
- Measure it with proven orders, kept apart from influenced orders.

## Shoppable UGC, defined

User-generated content is anything a customer makes about your product. That means photos, videos, reviews and social posts. Our guide to [UGC in ecommerce](/blog/what-is-ugc-ecommerce) covers the basics.

UGC becomes shoppable when each piece is linked to the products in it. The link is a product tag. A tag carries the product's name, price and variants from your catalogue. Tap the post and the tagged products appear, with a way to buy.

Three things separate it from a plain social feed. Products are tagged on the post. The shopper can act on the tag, ideally adding to cart in place. And the order can be traced back to the post. A feed with none of these is a gallery of pictures.

## How shoppable UGC works, step by step

**From a customer post to a counted sale**
1. **Collect** — Pull posts from social and review sites, or ask buyers to upload.
2. **Clear rights** — Ask the creator and keep a record of the yes.
3. **Tag products** — Link each post to the catalogue products it shows.
4. **Publish** — Place a gallery or video on the pages that need proof.
5. **Add to cart** — The shopper picks a variant and adds it from the post.
6. **Attribute** — Match the order back to the post the shopper touched.

**Collect.** Idukki pulls from Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, LinkedIn and Threads. It imports Google, Trustpilot, TripAdvisor and Judge.me reviews. Buyers can also upload photos and videos on your store.

**Clear rights.** A public post is not permission to sell with it. Ask the creator, and store their answer with a date. Our [rights tools guide](/blog/best-ugc-rights-management-tools-2026) covers what a good record holds.

**Tag products.** One post can carry several tags, one for each item in it. AI can suggest tags, and you approve them. On video, a tag can carry a timestamp. The product then shows while it is on screen.

**Add to cart.** Idukki adds to cart inside the gallery on six platforms. They are Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce, PrestaShop and Salesforce Commerce Cloud. On other platforms the product page opens.

**Attribute.** On Shopify, each order is matched from the store's own order webhook. A browser pixel alone misses orders. The [how it works page](/how-it-works) walks through all seven of our steps.

## The formats shoppable UGC takes

| Format | What the shopper sees | Where it fits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Grid | Tiles of posts; tap one to see tagged products | Home page, collection pages, a UGC page |
| Carousel | One row of posts that scrolls sideways | Product pages with little space |
| Shoppable reel | Vertical videos with a product card | Product pages and home page, on mobile |
| Hotspot pins | Pins on the image or video over each product | Outfit and room photos with many items |
| Lookbook | A mobile page of posts shared as one link | WhatsApp, email and seasonal drops |

You can set the pin style and colour. Pins can also stay hidden until the shopper taps the image. The lookbook builds one page per rights-cleared post and can carry an offer that expires.

## Where shoppable UGC appears

- **Product pages.** Posts tagged with that product, near the buy box. See [gallery placement and add-to-cart rate](/blog/ugc-gallery-placement-above-the-fold-add-to-cart-impact).
- **Home and collection pages.** A grid or reel across many products.
- **Email.** A Klaviyo-compatible web feed returns product-tagged posts, filtered by product. A flow can show customer photos next to the product.
- **Campaign pages.** One public URL tells a story in customer posts. It lists their products, with an optional offer. See [campaign pages](/campaign-pages).
- **In store.** Scan to Shop prints a QR code for a product or collection. Shoppers scan it, see real customers using it, then buy online. See [Scan to Shop](/scan-to-shop).

## How to measure shoppable UGC

Most vendor pages on this topic count clicks and stop. Clicks tell you people looked. Orders tell you it sold. Keep two order numbers apart.

### Two ways an order can follow a post
_How Idukki reports them. The two are never added together._

**Floor: Proven orders**
The shopper added the product to cart from the gallery, then bought.
- ✓ Hard to dispute
- ✓ Ties revenue to one post
- ✗ Undercounts the effect
- ✗ Misses shoppers who bought later another way

**Context: Influenced orders**
The shopper saw or clicked the content, then bought another way.
- ✓ Shows the wider reach
- ✓ Catches the browse-then-search path
- ✗ Weaker link to the post
- ✗ Never add it to proven

Treat proven revenue as a floor. If a report adds influenced orders on top, the total is no longer a measurement. Ask any vendor which column a number came from.

Two rates help as well. Click rate is clicks divided by impressions the widget served. Conversion rate is proven orders divided by engaged visitors. Read more in [how to measure UGC ROI](/blog/how-to-measure-ugc-roi).

## Where shoppable UGC goes wrong

- **Tags that go stale.** A tag pointing at a sold-out or deleted product sends shoppers to a dead end. Sync tags with the catalogue.
- **No rights record.** Selling from a post you never cleared invites a takedown request.
- **A heavy widget.** Every gallery loads a script. Ours downloads 79 KB of core code before it renders. Ask any vendor for their number.
- **Counting clicks as sales.** A click report says nothing about orders.

## Tools that make UGC shoppable

Many apps do this, and they differ on sources, platforms and billing. We keep the comparisons in two guides. Read [the best UGC platforms for Shopify](/blog/best-ugc-platforms-for-shopify-2026) for Shopify stores. Read [the buyer's hub](/blog/best-ugc-shoppable-video-platforms-2026) for the wider market. We make Idukki, and both guides say so.

To upgrade a gallery you already run, read [five ways to make your UGC gallery shoppable](/blog/shoppable-gallery-guide).

**The takeaway:** A shoppable post needs three things: a product tag, a way to buy, an order trail.

### Questions about shoppable UGC

**Q: What is shoppable UGC?**

A: Customer photos, videos and reviews tagged with their products. A shopper can buy straight from the post.

**Q: What is the difference between a UGC gallery and shoppable UGC?**

A: A gallery shows posts. Shoppable UGC adds product tags, a way to buy and order tracking.

**Q: Do I need permission to make customer posts shoppable?**

A: Yes. Ask the creator and keep a dated record. Selling with a post needs more than a public link.

**Q: Can shoppers add to cart without leaving the gallery?**

A: On Idukki, yes, on six platforms including Shopify and WooCommerce. Elsewhere the product page opens.

**Q: How do I know if shoppable UGC is working?**

A: Count proven orders: gallery add-to-cart, then purchase. Report influenced orders beside them, never added on top.
