# UGC video examples: 12 formats broken down by hook, claim and proof

What a UGC video is, then 12 formats broken down by hook, claim and proof. Plus what weak clips miss and how to collect your own with rights.

Most UGC clips fail in the same place. They open well, then never say what the product did. Or they say it and never show it. This page breaks clips into three parts, so you can spot the gap fast.

**A UGC video is a video about a product made by a customer or creator.** The brand did not film it. Brands reuse these clips, with permission, on product pages, in ads and in email.

**Quick answer**

- **Meaning:** UGC stands for user-generated content. A UGC video is the video kind.
- **The test:** every clip that sells has a hook, a claim and proof.
- **Twelve formats below,** each broken into those three parts.
- **Where it sells:** the product page, as [shoppable video](/shoppable-video) with the product tagged.
- **The rule:** get the creator's permission before any commercial reuse.

## The three-part test

Watch a clip with the sound on, then once with it off. Ask three questions. A clip that fails one of them rarely sells.

**Hook, claim, proof**
1. **Hook** — The first two seconds. Does a shopper see why to keep watching?
2. **Claim** — One specific thing the product did. "Fits a size 14" beats "love it".
3. **Proof** — The claim shown on camera. The fit, the result, the ice still in the cup.
_Score each part as there or missing. Missing proof is the most common gap._

The hook earns attention. The claim tells the shopper what to expect. The proof is what a brand ad lacks: the viewer sees it happen.

## A real example: the Stanley cup and the car fire

In November 2023, a TikTok user called Danielle posted her burnt-out car. A Stanley tumbler sat in the cupholder, intact, with ice still inside. Stanley's president, Terence Reilly, replied on TikTok two days later. He offered to send her new cups and replace her car. Fox Business and HubSpot both covered it.

| Part | What the clip did |
| --- | --- |
| Hook | A charred car interior. You keep watching to see what survived. |
| Claim | The tumbler came through a car fire. |
| Proof | The cup on camera, intact, still holding ice. |

Nobody briefed it. The proof was the whole video. That is the bar the formats below are measured against.

## 12 formats, broken down

The breakdowns below are illustrative. We wrote them for this guide to show the pattern. They are not clips from a named store.

### Formats that show the product

| Format | Hook | Claim | Proof |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Unboxing | "My main worry is the colour." | The colour matches the website photo | Product held next to the product page on a phone |
| Try-on | Height and usual size, said in one line | Medium fits a size 12 with room | Turns, sits and lifts arms on camera |
| Setup or room reveal | The empty corner before delivery | The sofa fits a small living room | Tape measure, then the finished room |
| Worn where it goes | Close-up of a wrist or hand | The watch suits a slim wrist | Wrist turned under daylight and lamp light |

_Illustrative breakdowns._

### Formats that show it working

| Format | Hook | Claim | Proof |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Tutorial | Hands on the product, step one under way | A beginner can do this in five minutes | Every step shown at real speed |
| Before and after | The before, filmed on day one | Visible change after six weeks | Same light, same angle, dated |
| Stress test | Something going wrong | The product survived it | The product shown working afterwards |
| Month-in review | "Thirty days later, here is what broke." | Still works after daily use | Wear marks shown up close |

_Illustrative breakdowns._

### Formats that give a verdict

| Format | Hook | Claim | Proof |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Honest review | "Who this is not for." | Great formula, weak pump | The pump failing, then the result on skin |
| Taste or reaction test | First sip, unscripted face | Hot, but you taste the fruit | The reaction itself, in one take |
| Comparison | Two products side by side | This one lasts longer | Both run until one stops, on camera |
| Reply to a comment | A shopper's comment on screen | Answers it directly | Shows the exact thing they asked about |

_Illustrative breakdowns._

## What the weak ones miss

**Weak clip vs strong clip**
Weak:
- Opens on the parcel and a hello
- "I love it, so cute"
- Product shown once, at a distance
- Ends on a brand name
Strong:
- Opens on the jacket already on
- "I'm 5'6, this is a medium, sleeves hit my wrist"
- Arms raised, zip done up, back turned
- Ends on the jacket, tagged and tappable
_Illustrative. The same try-on, filmed two ways._

- **No claim.** Praise without a fact gives the shopper nothing to check.
- **Proof off camera.** "It fits great" said while the product sits out of shot.
- **A slow start.** Packaging, greetings or a logo before the product appears.
- **No product tag.** The viewer is convinced and has nowhere to tap.

## How to collect your own, with rights

A customer tagging your product has not given you permission to reuse the clip. Commercial reuse needs their consent, recorded against the clip.

**From post to product page**
1. **Find** — Watch your tags, mentions and hashtags. Ask buyers for clips after delivery.
2. **Score** — Run the hook, claim and proof test. Keep clips that pass.
3. **Ask** — Request rights by comment or message, naming where you will use it.
4. **Record** — Store the yes, the date and the wording against the clip.
5. **Tag and place** — Tag the product shown and put the clip on that product page.

Message templates are in [Instagram UGC rights request templates](/blog/instagram-ugc-rights-request-templates). The legal side is in the [UGC rights and permissions guide](/blog/ugc-rights-and-permissions-guide). Idukki's [rights management](/rights-management) logs each consent.

- **4.1x** — video reviews convert vs text-only (PowerReviews, 2023 baseline)

_Two sourced figures on video and buying._

**The rule to apply:** Before you publish a clip, write its claim in one line. If you cannot point to the second that proves it, the clip goes back.

### FAQs

**Q: What is a UGC video?**

A: A video about a product made by a customer or creator. The brand did not film it. Brands reuse it with the creator's permission.

**Q: What makes a UGC video example good?**

A: A hook in the first two seconds. One specific claim. Proof of that claim on camera.

**Q: Can I use a customer's video because they tagged my brand?**

A: No. A tag is not permission. Ask for rights and record the reply before any commercial use.

**Q: Which format should I start with?**

A: Start with the question your product page leaves open. Fit questions suit try-ons. Size questions suit room reveals. Doubts about results suit before and after.
