# Which customer clip to show at each stage of your Meta retargeting

Browsers, cart abandoners and past buyers need different customer clips. A stage-to-clip table, the rights you need for paid use, and how to measure it.

You have one good customer video and three retargeting ad sets. So the same clip runs to all three. The person who glanced at the product page sees it. So does the one who left a cart, and the one who bought last month. Each of them is stuck on a different question.

**Quick answer**

- **Product page viewer:** show a problem clip. A customer shows the problem the product fixed.
- **Cart abandoner:** show a proof clip. Close-up, real fit, real size, honest verdict.
- **Checkout dropper:** show a delivery clip. The parcel arriving, the unboxing, the returns step.
- **Past buyer:** show a how-to clip, then a pairing clip for the next product.
- Paid use needs its own yes from the customer. Organic reuse permission does not cover ads.

## Why the hook changes at each stage

A retargeting audience is a list of people who already did something on your store. Meta builds these from your pixel as website custom audiences. You pick the event and a window of up to 180 days.

What they did tells you what stopped them. A product page viewer has not decided the product solves their problem. A cart abandoner wants it but has a doubt. A past buyer owns it and wants to get it right.

So the first three seconds should answer that doubt. A generic "I love this!" clip answers none of them. It wastes the spend on the one audience that already knows you.

**Four retargeting stages, four questions**
1. **Viewed a product** — Saw the page, did not add to cart. Asking: will this fix my problem? (Last 14 days)
2. **Added to cart** — Wanted it, then stopped. Asking: is it as good as it looks? (Last 7 days)
3. **Started checkout** — Got to delivery or payment. Asking: will it arrive, and can I send it back? (Last 3 days)
4. **Bought** — Owns it. Asking: how do I use it, and what goes with it? (30 to 90 days)
_Starting windows are our suggestion. Test your own; Meta allows up to 180 days._

## The stage-to-clip table

| Audience | What stops them | Clip to show | First three seconds |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Viewed product, no cart | Not sure it fixes their problem | Problem clip | The problem, on camera, before the product appears |
| Viewed several products | Cannot choose between them | Comparison or try-on clip | Two options side by side, worn or used |
| Added to cart, no order | Doubts quality, fit or size | Proof clip | A close-up of the detail they would check in a shop |
| Started checkout, no order | Worried about delivery or returns | Delivery clip | The parcel at the door, then the unboxing |
| Bought in the last 30 days | Unsure how to use it well | How-to clip | The product in hand, the first step shown |
| Bought 30 to 90 days ago | No reason to come back yet | Pairing clip | The product they own, worn with the next one |

### Problem clip: for people who only looked

The customer names the problem first, as in "my hair frizzes by lunchtime". The product comes after.

Cut any clip that opens on the packaging. This audience has not decided they care yet.

### Proof clip: for cart abandoners

This person wanted the product enough to add it. Their doubt is usually about something a photo hides. Show the seam, the texture or the true colour in daylight. Or show the fit on a body like theirs.

Match the clip to the product left in the cart. A proof clip for a different product answers the wrong doubt. Tag each clip with its product so you can find the right one fast.

### Delivery clip: for checkout droppers

Someone who reached the delivery step has mostly decided. What stops them is the next week. Will it come, will it fit, can it go back? A customer clip of the parcel arriving answers the first two. Put your returns window in the ad text.

### How-to and pairing clips: for past buyers

A new owner wants to get the first use right. A customer showing that first use answers their real question. Later, show it worn or used with another item. That gives them a reason to return.

Exclude recent buyers from your cart and checkout audiences. Meta lets you exclude a purchase audience from any ad set. Otherwise they see "still thinking about it?" after paying.

**Which clip for this ad set?**
Q: Has this person bought the product?
- Yes: **Past buyer** — Show a how-to clip in the first 30 days.
  - Bought 30 to 90 days ago: Switch to a pairing clip for the next product.
- No, but they added it to cart: **Cart or checkout** — Show a proof clip of the exact product.
  - They reached checkout: Lead with a delivery clip and the returns window.
- No, they only viewed it: **Browser** — Show a problem clip that names the problem first.
  - They viewed several products: Use a comparison or try-on clip instead.

## Rights: paid use needs its own yes

A customer who let you share their post on your site has not agreed to ads. Ask for paid use by name. Say which channels, and for how long.

- **Name the use.** "Paid ads on Instagram and Facebook for 12 months" is a clear ask.
- **Keep the record.** Store the reply with the post, and the date it ends.
- **Running it from their handle?** Meta partnership ads need the creator's permission in Meta. They can revoke it at any time.
- **Edits count.** Say if you will cut, caption or reframe the clip.

Our guide to [whitelisting and paid usage rights](/blog/influencer-whitelisting-and-paid-usage-rights) covers the terms in detail. For finding clips worth paying behind, see [sourcing UGC for paid ads](/blog/sourcing-ugc-for-paid-ads).

## How to measure it

Change one thing per test. Keep the audience, budget and ad text the same, and swap only the clip. Meta's A/B test in Ads Manager splits the audience for you.

- **Judge each stage on its own.** Compare a cart clip with the cart clip it replaced.
- **Count orders.** Clicks and thumb-stops are early signals only.
- **Watch frequency.** Small cart audiences see the same clip many times. Rotate two or three proof clips.
- **Hold some people out.** A holdout shows whether the ad caused the order.

Read [UGC incrementality testing](/blog/ugc-incrementality-testing-holdout) for how to set up a holdout. To check how your store credits orders to content, try the [attribution comparator](/tools/attribution).

## Where Idukki fits

We make Idukki. It collects customer posts, tags them to products and records the rights reply. That gives you a library of clips you can search by product.

Our [Smart Retargeting](/smart-retargeting) is in beta. It sends gallery events, like a product view or add-to-cart from a customer post, to Meta. You can build audiences from those events in Idukki today. Direct sync to Meta Ads Manager has not shipped yet.

**One rule to start with:** Before you launch a retargeting ad set, write down the doubt that audience has. If the clip does not answer it in three seconds, pick another clip.

### Questions merchants ask

**Q: Can I use the same customer video for every retargeting audience?**

A: You can, but each stage stalls on a different doubt. One clip will answer one of them at best.

**Q: Which clip works best for abandoned carts?**

A: A proof clip of the exact product in the cart. Show the detail a photo hides: fit, texture or true colour.

**Q: Do I need extra permission to run a customer post as an ad?**

A: Yes. Ask for paid use by name, with channels and a time limit. Keep the reply with the post.

**Q: How long should my retargeting windows be?**

A: Meta allows up to 180 days. Shorter windows suit cart and checkout audiences. Test your own.
