# Shopify review theme blocks: an afternoon setup

Install Shopify review theme blocks in ninety minutes. Order of work for stars, review hub, Q&A and thank-you, plus a QA checklist. We make Idukki.

You installed a reviews app last quarter. The stars still missing from half your product templates. The hub page is a blank section. Support still owns every fit question. This afternoon is for finishing the theme work. Leave the app bake-off for another day.

**Quick answer**

- **Finish one app's theme blocks** before you compare another reviews app.
- **Install order matters:** app embed, product stars, review list, hub, Q&A, thank-you.
- **Budget ninety minutes** with a published theme preview and one bestseller PDP.
- **QA stars, hub, Q&A and thank-you** on phone and desktop before you publish.
- **Turn structured data on only** for first-party product reviews visible on the page.

We make Idukki. On Shopify its theme blocks cover Product Rating Stars, review layouts, Q&A and a thank-you invite. Stars can emit optional review JSON-LD. The steps below fit any reviews app that ships theme app blocks. Stay inside one product for the afternoon.

## The 90-minute clock

**Afternoon setup, timed**
1. **0–10 min: app + embed** — Confirm the app is installed. Enable the app embed in the theme editor. (10 min)
2. **10–30 min: PDP stars + list** — Add rating stars near the title. Add the review list below the fold on one product template. (20 min)
3. **30–50 min: hub page** — Create or edit /pages/reviews. Drop the hub or all-reviews block. Link it from the footer. (20 min)
4. **50–70 min: Q&A** — Add the Q&A block to the same product template. Seed two answers from support. (20 min)
5. **70–85 min: thank-you** — Add the thank-you or order-status block that asks for a photo or review. (15 min)
6. **85–90 min: QA pass** — Run the checklist below on phone and desktop, then publish. (5 min)
_Use a duplicate theme or a theme preview. Publish only after the QA pass._

> **One template first:** Edit the product template your bestsellers use. Spreading unfinished blocks across five templates wastes the afternoon. Clone the working template after QA.

## Install order that avoids broken previews

1. Install or open the reviews app in Shopify admin.
2. Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds: turn the reviews embed on.
3. On a product template, add Product Rating Stars (or equivalent) under the title.
4. Add the review list / photo reviews block where shoppers expect proof.
5. Create the reviews hub page and place the hub block.
6. Add Q&A on the product template; seed at least two answers.
7. Open Checkout → Thank you / Order status customisations; add the post-purchase block.
8. Preview as a customer on mobile; then publish the theme.

Shopify's thank-you and order status app blocks work on plans below Plus. You do not need Plus only to ask for a review after payment.

## Product stars and structured data

Stars near the title answer "is this trusted?" before the fold. The review list below carries the bodies and photos.

If your block offers "Add SEO structured data", limit it to first-party reviews on that page. Google's guidelines say not to mark up ratings aggregated from other websites. Imported Google or Trustpilot scores can stay visible; leave them out of the JSON-LD.

> **Judge.me already on the theme?:** If Judge.me (or another reviews app) already outputs product rating markup, keep one source of AggregateRating. Two competing JSON-LD blocks confuse validators and shoppers. Pick one emitter and switch the other off.

## Hub, Q&A and thank-you

- **Hub:** a /pages/reviews URL with filters. Shoppers and crawlers can browse proof off the PDP.
- **Q&A:** one block on the product template. Seed from the support inbox so it is not empty.
- **Thank-you:** a light ask for a photo or review after payment. Keep scripts off the payment steps.

## QA checklist before you publish

| Surface | Pass looks like |
| --- | --- |
| App embed | Embed on; no console errors on the PDP |
| Stars under title | Average and count match the review list for that product |
| Review list | Bodies and photos visible without a second click maze |
| Structured data | Validator passes; no second AggregateRating from another app |
| Reviews hub | Page loads, lists recent reviews, linked from footer |
| Q&A | At least two seeded answers; ask box works while logged out |
| Thank-you block | Shows after a test order; no checkout payment-step scripts |
| Mobile | Stars and ask box reachable with one thumb |
| Empty product | Product with zero reviews shows no fake 5.0 aggregate |

_Check on a real phone and on desktop. Fix red rows before publish._

Run a sample URL through the [review schema validator](/tools/review-schema-validator) after the stars block is on.

## What this afternoon is not

This is not a tour of every Shopify reviews app. Switching apps mid-afternoon resets theme work you already owe yourself. Finish the blocks on the stack you have. Compare vendors later with a clear list of surfaces you already run.

**Ship rule:** One product template, four surfaces, ninety minutes, then QA on a phone. Publish only when stars, hub, Q&A and thank-you all pass.

### Questions merchants ask

**Q: Do I need Shopify Plus for thank-you review blocks?**

A: No. Thank you and Order status app blocks are available below Plus. Payment-step checkout extensions are the Plus-gated surface.

**Q: Should I enable review JSON-LD on every product?**

A: Enable it where first-party product reviews are visible. Omit aggregates on products with no rated reviews. Do not mark up imported third-party scores.

**Q: What if I already use Judge.me stars?**

A: Keep one markup source. Judge.me can stay as collector and Google submitter. Decide how theme blocks share the page. Avoid double AggregateRating.

**Q: How long should seeding Q&A take?**

A: Two to five answers from last week's support macros is enough for the afternoon. Expand after publish.
