# Unboxing season: collect holiday UGC in December, sell with it in January

The gift is opened on 25 December, often on camera. How to ask the right person at the right time. Then clear rights and use the clips in January.

By Rohin Aggarwal · 2026-10-22

It is Christmas morning. Your scarf comes out of the wrapping paper and someone films the reaction. The clip goes into a family group chat. Your post-delivery email reached the buyer three weeks ago. You will never see the video.

**Quick answer**

- **Gift orders need a later ask.** A post-delivery email lands weeks before the gift is opened.
- **Buyers and recipients are two audiences.** You have the buyer's email. The recipient only has the box.
- **Let the box ask.** An insert card with a QR code to an upload page reaches the recipient.
- **Clear rights before any reuse.** Upload pages capture consent. Hashtag posts need a rights request.
- **Use it in January.** Sale product pages, Valentine's pages for Sunday 14 February 2027, and email.

This plan gets you a stock of real gift-opening clips by the first week of January. You can then put them on the pages that sell in January and February. Most of the work happens before the boxes ship.

- **Fri 25 Dec** — Christmas Day 2026 (Most gifts are opened, and filmed, today)
- **Mon 4 Jan** — First full working week of 2027 (Your second ask lands here)
- **Sun 14 Feb** — Valentine's Day 2027 (Gift pages need fresh proof by late January)

_The three dates this plan runs on. Days of the week computed for 2026 and 2027._

## The gift opens on the 25th. Your request went out on the 3rd.

Say your UGC request fires a set number of days after delivery. That works for a shopper who bought for themselves. It fails for a gift.

Take a scarf ordered on Black Friday, 27 November. It arrives in early December and goes under the tree. Your request reaches the buyer while the scarf is still wrapped. The person who opens it never hears from you.

So split your December orders in two. Self-purchases keep the normal request. Gift orders get a later ask, and a second route that travels in the box.

### How to spot a gift order

- **A gift message.** Any order with text in the gift note field.
- **Gift wrap.** A gift wrap line item or option on the order.
- **A different name.** The shipping name differs from the billing name.
- **A gift receipt.** The buyer asked for prices to be left off.

None of these is perfect. Together they catch most gifts, and a wrong guess costs one mistimed email.

## Buyers and recipients need different asks

| | The buyer | The gift recipient |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Do you have their contact? | Yes, from the order | Usually not |
| When they see the product | On delivery | When the gift is opened |
| Best channel | Email or SMS after the holiday | A card in the box with a QR code |
| What to ask for | Their reaction video, or a forward to the recipient | The unboxing, and the item in use |
| Who gives consent | Only for clips they filmed | The person who filmed and uploads |

_Two people, two moments. Write a separate ask for each._

The buyer often films the moment on their own phone. Ask them for it. Then give them a link to forward, so the recipient can send their own.

## When to send each ask

| When | Who | What to send |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Before the first gift ships | Your team | Print the insert cards. Set up gift and non-gift campaigns. |
| Nov to Dec, self-purchases | Buyer | Your normal request, a few days after delivery. |
| Nov to Dec, gift orders | Nobody yet | Hold the request until after Christmas. |
| Sat 26 or Sun 27 Dec | Gift buyer | Did they like it? Send us the moment, or forward this link. |
| Mon 4 Jan 2027 | Gift buyer | One reminder, to people who have not uploaded. |
| Mid January | Everyone | Stop asking for unboxings. Ask how the item looks in use. |
| Late January | Your team | Build Valentine's pages with the approved clips. |

_A calendar for 2026 orders. Check your carriers' published cutoffs before you promise any delivery date._

Keep the post-Christmas ask short. One line, one link, no survey. If you already run an SMS flow, the [two-week SMS unboxing playbook](/blog/two-week-sms-unboxing-campaign-playbook) has the message order.

## Let the box ask: an insert card with a QR code

The recipient never sees your email. The box is the only thing of yours they hold. Put a small card inside it with one sentence and a QR code.

The code should open an upload page on the phone, with no app and no login. Our [hosted upload page](/collect-ugc) does this. It takes a photo or video and asks which product it shows. It records consent in the same flow.

- **One sentence on the card.** "Opened this as a gift? Scan to send us the moment."
- **Say what to film.** The reaction, then the item held up or worn.
- **Match the page to the card.** Use the welcome message to repeat the card's line.
- **Say thank you after the upload.** The page can redirect to a thank-you or discount page.
- **Print before you pack.** A card designed in December misses the gifts that shipped in November.

Use two codes, one for gift orders and one for the rest. Then you can compare which box got more uploads. [QR Campaigns](/qr-campaigns) gives each campaign its own code, scan count and submission count. It is in early access, so ask us before you plan print around it.

## A hashtag for the people who post anyway

Some recipients will post the unboxing on Instagram or TikTok whatever you ask. Give them a tag to use. Print it on the same card, under the QR code.

- **Search it before you print.** A tag other brands or fans already use will fill with their posts.
- **Keep it short.** Your brand name plus one word, such as the year.
- **Watch your mentions too.** Many people tag the account and skip the hashtag.

Hashtag posts arrive with no permission attached. Treat every one as a lead to follow up, and ask before you reuse it.

**From the wrapping paper to a January product page**
1. **Ask** — Insert card for the recipient. A post-Christmas email for the gift buyer.
2. **Collect** — Uploads arrive through the QR page. Tagged posts arrive through the hashtag.
3. **Clear rights** — Upload consent is on file. Hashtag posts get a rights request first.
4. **Moderate** — Check faces, addresses, music and whether the product is visible.
5. **Tag products** — Link each approved clip to the product it shows.
6. **Publish in January** — Sale pages, Valentine's pages and email.
_Each step happens once per clip. Rights and moderation come before any reuse._

## Rights before reuse

The person who filmed a clip owns it. That may be the recipient, the buyer or an aunt with a phone. You need a yes from that person. Get it before the clip goes on your site or in an ad.

An upload through the hosted page carries that yes. The consent step records licence terms on the submission. A hashtag post carries nothing. Send a [rights request](/rights-management) and wait for the reply before you use it.

Christmas videos have one extra trap: music. A carol playing in the room is someone else's recording. Use that clip muted, or leave it out. The [UGC rights guide](/blog/ugc-rights-and-permissions-guide) covers the rest.

## Moderation: what to check in a Christmas-morning video

Holiday clips are filmed at home, in a hurry, with family around. Check each one for these before it goes live. [Moderation](/moderation) in Idukki lets you review each clip before it goes live.

- **Children.** Decide your policy on children's faces before the clips arrive. Then apply it to every clip.
- **Addresses.** A shipping label on the box can show a name and street. Crop it or skip the clip.
- **Other brands.** Gifts are opened in piles. Skip clips where another brand's product takes the frame.
- **Can you see the product?** A reaction with no clear product shot will not help a shopper decide.
- **Damage.** A clip that shows a broken item goes to customer service first.

## Where the clips go in January

By the first week of January you should have approved, tagged clips. Three places can use them straight away.

| Clip type | Where it goes | Why it fits |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Item worn or used after opening | January sale product pages | Shows the item off the studio set |
| Gift reaction with a clear product shot | Valentine's gift pages and gift guides | Shows how the gift lands |
| Unboxing with packaging in view | Product pages for giftable items | Answers what arrives in the box |
| Best three clips of the batch | January sale and Valentine's emails | Gives the email a real customer face |

_Match each kind of clip to the page that needs it._

### January sale product pages

Sale traffic lands on product pages that have looked the same since November. Put the new clips near the price and the buy button. [Where to place shoppable video](/blog/where-to-place-shoppable-video) covers the spots that get seen.

### Valentine's 2027 pages

Valentine's Day 2027 falls on Sunday 14 February. Gift shoppers need time to order and receive before that weekend. Build the pages in late January so the clips are live before that week. The [seasonal UGC playbook](/blog/seasonal-ugc-playbooks-valentines-mothers-day-back-to-school) has the Valentine's calendar.

### Email

Pick the three clearest clips and link each to its product. A shoppable gallery on a landing page lets the email carry one image and one link.

### FAQs

**Q: When should I ask a gift buyer for an unboxing video?**

A: After Christmas. Send one ask on 26 or 27 December. Send one reminder in the first week of January.

**Q: How do I reach a gift recipient who never gave me an email?**

A: Through the box. Put a card with a QR code in the box. It reaches them on the day they open it.

**Q: Can I use an unboxing video someone tagged with my hashtag?**

A: Not until the person who filmed it says yes. Send a rights request and keep the reply.

**Q: Should I reward people for uploading?**

A: You can send them to a thank-you discount after the upload. If you do, say so where the content appears, and check the rules in your market.

**Your next step:** This week, write the one-line insert card and pick the hashtag. Then set up the upload page it points to. Have the card ready before your first gift order ships.
