# First-party Google Merchant Center product ratings feed

How a first-party product ratings feed earns Shopping stars. Field map, honesty rules, Shopify path, QA and fixes for missing stars. We make Idukki.

Your Shopping ads show price and a studio shot. A rival in the same row shows stars. You already collect reviews on your store. The gap is not proof. It is a feed Google never received.

**Quick answer**

- **Shopping stars need a product ratings feed** (or a supported aggregator). On-page AggregateRating does not feed Shopping ads.
- **Google's floor is 50 reviews** across the catalogue. Refresh at least monthly on a matching Merchant Center domain.
- **Send only your own product reviews.** Leave out imported Google, Trustpilot and Judge.me rows when Judge.me already submits them.
- **Never synthesise ratings** to clear the floor. Grow volume with real buyer asks instead of invented scores.
- **Match on GTIN first.** Missing identifiers are the usual reason eligible stores still show no stars.

_Figure: Product ratings join Shopping listings on a shared product identifier. The main product feed stays separate._

We make Idukki. On Shopify it can build a product reviews feed in Google's schema (version 2.4). The feed uses approved, rated, product-tagged reviews from your store. You switch it on, add its URL in Merchant Center, and Google fetches it. Stars still need Google's Product Ratings approval and the 50-review floor.

## First-party vs third-party stars

First-party means reviews buyers left on your store, for your products. You own the text, the photos and the count. A first-party feed sends those reviews to Google under your Merchant Center account.

Third-party stars come another way. A supported reviews aggregator on Google's list can submit for you. Or Google may compile ratings for free listings from several sources. Store ratings rate the merchant as a seller. Organic review snippets come from markup on the product page.

| Star surface | Source | Your job |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Shopping ads product ratings | Product reviews feed or supported aggregator | Share every eligible product review; refresh monthly |
| Free listings product ratings | Google may compile from several sources | Sharing your reviews can help matching; not guaranteed |
| Store ratings | Seller-level reviews | Separate programme; different thresholds |
| Organic review snippets | Review and AggregateRating JSON-LD on the page | Keep markup honest and visible on that PDP |

_Summarised from Google Merchant Center Help and Google Search Central. Confirm thresholds on the source pages before you plan._

> **Judge.me partner-safe note:** Judge.me sits on Google's supported Product Ratings aggregator list. If Judge.me already submits your reviews, do not also push those same rows through another feed. Idukki leaves Judge.me reviews out of its Google feed for that reason. One source of truth avoids double submit.

## Feed fields that matter

Google joins the ratings feed to your product feed on identifiers. GTIN is the strongest key. Without it, Google tries SKU, brand plus MPN and URLs, which match less well.

**From buyer review to Shopping star**
1. **Collect** — Ask every buyer after delivery. Moderate spam and off-topic text. Leave star ratings alone. (Verified buyers)
2. **Tag** — Attach each review to the product and identifiers Google can join on. (GTIN first)
3. **Publish feed** — Export approved, rated rows in Google's product reviews schema. (Schema 2.4)
4. **Fetch** — Merchant Center pulls the data source on a schedule you keep monthly. (Monthly refresh)
5. **Match and show** — Google validates, matches products and renders stars where eligible. (2–4 weeks first pass)
_The operating loop once Product Ratings is enabled._

| Field role | What it carries | Why it fails |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Product identifier | GTIN, or SKU / brand+MPN / item id | Mismatch with the main product feed drops the join |
| product_url | Canonical PDP URL on your Merchant Center domain | Domain drift after a replatform removes eligibility |
| Overall rating | Average and scale for that product | Must match the reviews you actually send |
| review_count / samples | Count plus sample review bodies | Padded or AI-written reviews break policy |
| Reviewer and timestamp | Name (or verified label) and date | Empty or fake attribution fails quality review |
| is_incentivized_review | Flag when a reward was offered | Required when an incentive was used; sentiment must stay free |

_High-level field map for a first-party product ratings feed. Exact XML names live in Google's product reviews feed docs._

> **Audit GTINs before volume:** Sixty reviews with complete GTINs can out-show three hundred reviews with patchy identifiers. Fix the join key on advertised products first.

## AggregateRating honesty rules

The feed and the page markup are related but separate jobs. Shopping stars come from the feed. Organic snippets come from Review and AggregateRating JSON-LD on the PDP.

- ratingValue and reviewCount must come from real reviews shown for that product.
- Omit AggregateRating when a product has no rated reviews. Do not invent a 5.0.
- Do not fold Trustpilot or Google Business scores into a product AggregateRating.
- Google's Product Ratings policies reject AI-generated reviews, insider reviews and off-topic text.
- Incentives are allowed only when they do not depend on sentiment, and you flag them.

Test the page half with our [review schema validator](/tools/review-schema-validator). Fix markup errors before you chase missing Shopping stars.

_Figure: Honest AggregateRating mirrors the reviews a shopper can read on the page. The feed must stay in step with that same set._

## Shopify path

1. Collect product reviews on the store (post-purchase ask, photos and video welcome).
2. Confirm products carry GTINs in Shopify and in the Google & YouTube product sync.
3. Enable the product reviews feed in your reviews tool when you pass fifty reviews.
4. In Merchant Center, register for Product Ratings if you use a direct data source.
5. Add the feed URL under Products, then Product reviews, and wait out the quality review.
6. Keep the monthly refresh running with updated reviews. A frozen file ages out.

Idukki's feed stays off until you switch it on. It leaves out imported Google, Trustpilot and TripAdvisor reviews. It also leaves out Judge.me reviews, because Judge.me can submit those itself. Details sit on the [reviews page](/reviews).

## QA before go-live

| Check | Pass looks like |
| --- | --- |
| Review count | At least 50 approved, rated, product-tagged reviews in the feed |
| Identifiers | Advertised SKUs carry matching GTINs in product and ratings feeds |
| Domain | product_url hosts match the Merchant Center registered domain |
| Account type | Standalone Merchant Center account or sub-account with admin access |
| Source purity | No imported third-party rows; no double submit with an aggregator |
| On-page match | Sample PDPs show the same average and count the feed claims |
| Policy sample | No AI-written, employee or off-topic reviews in a random pull |
| Schedule | Monthly fetch or upload is booked, with a fresh-reviews rule |

_Run this once before you submit, then again after the first Google fetch._

## Troubleshoot missing stars

| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| No stars anywhere | Under 50 reviews, or Product Ratings not enabled | Collect past the floor; finish onboarding |
| All stars vanished | Monthly upload lapsed or file had no updates | Restore the schedule; confirm the aggregator token |
| Stars gone after replatform | product_url domain no longer matches | Rewrite review URLs; re-verify the site |
| Some SKUs never rate | Missing or wrong GTINs | Align identifiers across both feeds |
| Status inactive | Data quality review still running | Allow two to four weeks; clear reported errors |
| Count dropped | Policy removals (AI, insider, low quality) | Tighten collection and moderation |

_Causes drawn from Google Merchant Center Help on Product Ratings. Fix plumbing before you assume a penalty._

**Operating rule:** Treat Shopping stars as a feed you run every month. Keep identifiers clean. Send every real review. Never invent scores. Keep on-page AggregateRating honest and separate.

### Questions merchants ask

**Q: Does AggregateRating on my PDP give me Shopping ad stars?**

A: No. On-page markup helps organic review snippets. Shopping ad stars come from the Product Ratings programme via a feed or a supported aggregator.

**Q: How many reviews do I need?**

A: Google Merchant Center requires at least 50 product reviews in the set you share. Refresh monthly with updated reviews.

**Q: Can I synthesise reviews to hit 50?**

A: No. Google's policies reject AI-generated and fake reviews. Invented scores risk the feed and the account. Collect from real buyers instead.

**Q: Should I include Judge.me reviews in an Idukki feed?**

A: No. Judge.me can submit to Google itself. Idukki leaves those rows out so the same review is not sent twice.

**Q: How long until stars appear?**

A: Google says two to four weeks after the data source passes checks.
