# A/B testing UGC placement: a framework

Where UGC sits on a page changes the conversion lift. Test one variable at a time, on enough traffic, for a full weekly cycle, and measure conversion, not clicks.

Most UGC A/B tests across our customer base were under-powered: too few sessions, too short, statistically inconclusive. The framework below is the one that lands a meaningful result inside three weeks for a mid-market store, with the trap-doors flagged where they tend to open.

**Quick answer**

- The same UGC lifts conversion differently depending on where on the page it sits.
- Placement is a testable variable, you do not have to guess.
- Test one change at a time, on enough traffic, for long enough to trust the result.
- Measure conversion, not engagement vanity metrics, and re-test as the site changes.

Brands argue UGC placement in meetings (above or below the gallery, before or after the description) and then settle it by opinion. It is one of the easier things to actually test, and a test swaps the loudest voice in the room for a number.

## Why test placement at all?

[UGC near the decision, in the natural scroll path](/blog/inline-vs-floating-widgets), usually lifts more than UGC tucked away. But "usually" is not "always", and the best placement shifts with template, product and audience. A test tells you what is true for your store, not what was true for someone else's.

## What does a clean testing framework look like?

1. Pick one variable, e.g. UGC gallery above vs below the product description. Just one.
2. Define the metric up front, conversion rate (and ideally AOV), decided before you look.
3. Split traffic cleanly, comparable visitors, same time window.
4. Run it long enough, to a real sample size, through at least a full weekly cycle; do not call it early.
5. Decide, ship the winner, then test the next single variable.

## Which metrics actually count?

- [Conversion rate](/blog/ugc-conversion-rate-boost), the primary metric; placement’s real job.
- AOV and units per order, placement can shift basket size, not just conversion.
- Not engagement alone, more clicks on a gallery that did not lift conversion is not a win.

| Signal | Treat as | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Conversion rate | Primary verdict | Placement’s actual job |
| AOV / units per order | Secondary read | Placement can shift basket size |
| Gallery clicks / dwell | Diagnostic only | Engagement without lift is not a win |
| An early "win" | Noise until powered | Small samples flip on you |

_What to trust in a placement test, and what to ignore._

> **Test hygiene:** One variable at a time, or you cannot attribute the result. Do not peek and stop the moment it looks good, early "wins" are mostly noise. Do not run a placement test during a major promotion or traffic-source change. A sloppy test is worse than no test, because it produces false confidence.

Two things sit just outside the test but decide whether the result holds. A faster variant can win on speed alone, so hold page weight flat across arms: the discipline is in [how to add social proof without slowing your store](/blog/social-proof-without-slowing-your-store). And before you test placement of a video at all, the format and length questions are worth settling, covered in [where to place shoppable video](/blog/where-to-place-shoppable-video).

**The placement rule:** Stop arguing about where UGC should go. Test one placement change at a time, [measure conversion](/blog/how-to-measure-ugc-roi), and let the data settle it.

> **How Idukki helps:** Idukki lets you place UGC galleries on different surfaces and reports how each performs, so placement decisions can be made on conversion data, not opinion.
